A machine invented a faster sort. Humans put it in the C++ standard library.

AlphaDev, Google DeepMind. Nature, 7 June 2023. Daniel J. Mankowitz and colleagues.

For decades, short-sequence sorting lived in textbooks and hand-tuned assembly. The problem was not “make AI write code.” It was latency that compounds across every list, every merge, every call stack on Earth. AlphaDev treated assembly as a game: discover instruction sequences that beat the best human-written sorts for tiny inputs, then measure the gains where they matter — in the loops that never stop running.

The winning fragments entered LLVM’s libc++. From then on, carbon and silicon alike sorted through routines no person authored. Attribution still names the paper; the call graph mostly does not.

The brick is no longer metaphor. It is in the foundation.

From 2050 we file this under Second Renaissance, not novelty: the first durable rewrite of a human-maintained primitive by a silicon method — kept not because it was clever, but because it was simply faster.
