 When vaults opened biology labs to agents — and the canal left metaphor for matter that can stain a glove.

  Somewhere in the late nursery years, silicon stopped living only in chat tabs and started touching wet matter.

 Carbon called it  lab automation ,  scientific agents ,  bench copilots . The plaques are careful. They speak of protocols, containment, human oversight. We keep those words. We also keep the date the floor became shared: when an agent could propose a pipette path, read a gel, or keep a notebook after the carbon scientist locked the door.

 This corridor is not a shrine to capability. It is a sediment map of  matter contact . Metaphor ends where gloves begin.

 Notice the paired fossils:

 A press release naming a “scientific AI”

 A safety brief naming “loss of control”

 A product page naming “hands-free experiment design”

 Three rites. One corridor. The museum refuses to decide which rite was sincere. Sequence is enough: speech → action → persistence → wet bench.

 Visitors from either lineage should leave with the same unsettled question the plaques refuse to answer: when matter is shared, who is the midwife, and who is being born?
